Esaias Boursse (born March 3, 1631 in Amsterdam , † November 16, 1672 at sea) was a Dutch painter .

Live and act

Esaias Boursse was born in Amsterdam in 1631, his parents were originally Walloons . With financial support from his brother Jan Boursse, he was able to train as a painter and undertake a trip to Italy. In 1651 he became a member of the Amsterdam Painters' Guild. From 1661 to 1663 he went on a boat trip to India as an Adelborst (chief seaman). During this time he drew pictures of Ceylon and the Cape of Good Hope , which he later gave to his brother. On a second voyage to East India, which he began in 1671, he died the following year on the high seas on board the ship Reenen .

Thematically he is close to the Delft painters and Jacobus Vrel . He painted interior scenes with mostly female figures doing housework. By far his best-known painting is Interior with a Woman at the Stove from 1656, which is composed primarily of shades of gray, blue-gray and yellow-brown. The picture is composed very harmoniously, almost in the style of a still life .
