The Eschersheimer linden tree in winter

The Eschersheimer Linde is a natural monument and landmark of the Frankfurt district of Eschersheim .

history

The Eschersheimer Linden, a winter linden ( Latin Tilia cordata ), was planted at the end of the 17th century as a landmark in an open field on the eastern side of the Eschersheimer Landstrasse , at that time an undeveloped road . It was originally called Kleine Linde . The large lime tree , which was around 50 years older, was located further north at Am Weißen Stein on the outskirts of Eschersheim at the time. This was badly damaged in the 19th century; their remains collapsed in a storm in 1923.

Since 1888 a steam tram of the Frankfurter Lokalbahn has been running over Eschersheimer Landstrasse, which was taken over by the municipal tram in 1901 and electrified in 1908. The tram got a stop in front of the linden tree . In the 20th century, the road was gradually built on on both sides.

The remaining Eschersheimer Linde has been a natural monument since 1937 . It is about 25 meters high and has a trunk circumference of five meters. In 1955 and 1974 she was treated with tree surgery . The tree was increasingly endangered by the asphalting of the road and the increasing sealing of the surrounding areas. That is why it received drainage in 1968 in the course of the expansion of the Eschersheimer Landstrasse, and in 1984 artificial irrigation and ventilation.

The linden tree is the namesake of the street Am Lindenbaum , which joins the Eschersheimer Landstraße south of the tree from the east. The Lindenbaum subway station on subway line A has been located at this intersection since 1968 . The subway is led in a slight curve here because of the tree.
