Escobar Inc is a Colombian holding company ( conglomerate ) based in Medellín . The company operates multinationally and goes back to a company of the same name owned by Pablo Escobar in the 1980s , which was used for money laundering. Since the re-establishment in 2014 by Escobar's eldest brother Roberto de Jesús Escobar Gaviria , it has been run by Olof K. Gustafsson .
history
Escobar Inc was founded on May 1st, 1984 by Pablo Escobar, after the assassination of the Colombian Justice Minister Rodrigo Lara Bonilla . The purpose of the venture was to launder and smuggle out of Colombia large sums of cash that Escobar made through its criminal activities and drug trafficking . The money was then invested abroad. In doing so, he relied on the support of his brother Roberto Escobar in the management of the company to transfer up to 420 million US dollars per week with the company . The company's activities ceased when Roberto Escobar surrendered to the authorities on October 8, 1992, after his brother Pablo had previously been killed by an elite US-Colombian unit .
Start-up
In 2014, the company was re-established by Roberto Escobar in Medellín, Colombia with managing director Olof K. Gustafsson. Daniel Reitberg, who no longer works for the company, acted as COO . The main reason for the start-up was to regain control of the Pablo Escobar brand and that of the Escobar family. The company successfully registered succession rights to Pablo Escobar in California , USA. In addition, the company successfully registered 10 more trademarks with the US Patent and Trademark Office .
Even after its start-up, the company operates in the border area of legality and serious business conduct. She regularly offers products such as cell phones , wristwatches or special gold bars, which are aimed at private customers and whose appearance follows current trends. The products offered are sometimes copies from well-known manufacturers that are offered at significantly lower prices and there are reports of orders that have not been delivered and the loss of the purchase price due to insecure payment service providers.
More controversy
Conflict with Netflix
On July 1, 2016, Escobar Inc sent a letter to the production company Netflix . It referred to the television series Narcos and demanded USD 1 billion as compensation for lost profits for allegedly unauthorized use of content. A year later, on September 11, 2017, the location scout Carlos Muñoz Portal, who works for Netflix, was found murdered in his car in Mexico . Roberto Escobar denied any involvement in the incident and additionally offered to make an employee who had previously been convicted of a contract killer available to Netflix as a security service. On November 6, 2017, the two companies came to an agreement regarding the use of unauthorized content by paying an undisclosed amount.
US presidential election 2016
On April 11, 2016, in the run-up to the 2016 US presidential election , the Washington Post reported , citing the news platform Zignal labs , that the CEO of Escobar Inc, Olof K. Gustafsson, allegedly supported Republican candidate Donald J. Trump in the social media to attract followers, making the presence and success of Donald Trump in these areas increased considerably. Three years later, the company took the opposite position and on January 8, 2019, it launched a fundraising drive of $ 50 million on the GoFundMe donation platform to finance an impeachment trial against President Donald Trump. The campaign ended after just 10 hours - during which around 10 million US dollars were already collected - because the platform prevented the project.
Elon Musk and The Boring Company
In July 2019, Escobar Inc began selling a propane burner designed to look like a flamethrower . At the same time, the company accused the CEO of The Boring Company , Elon Musk , of stealing intellectual property. Its product, Not-a-Flamethrower , presented in April 2018 - distributed by The Boring Company - is said to be based on a design by Roberto Escobar, which was discussed with one of Musk's engineers in 2017. In the course of the public dispute, Escobar Inc Musk offered to settle the dispute with $ 100 million in cash or Tesla shares. Roberto Escobar also threatened to take legal action against Musk, suggesting that he could become the new CEO of Tesla if necessary.
