Escuminac is a fishing village in the Canadian province of New Brunswick . The place has 212 inhabitants (2011).

geography

Escuminac is located in Northumberland County at the mouth of the Miramichi River after its extension to Miramichi Bay and immediately before its transition into the Gulf of St. Lawrence . Miramichi is around 40 kilometers to the west . There is a lighthouse on the coast near the village .

history

The area of today's fishing village was inhabited hundreds of years ago by the Mi'kmaq Indians . The name Escuminac in the language of the natives means something like "vantage point" (English. Watching place ). Because of its abundance of fish, the area was populated by British and Acadian immigrants.

On the night of June 19-20, 1959, the place was struck by a great tragedy. A devastating hurricane hit the coast off Escuminac and capsized 22 fishing boats. Due to the extremely rough sea with meter-high waves, 35 people lost their lives. A memorial, the Escuminac Disaster Memorial, was erected in honor of the dead .

Today the livelihood of the inhabitants is still fishing, seasonally also the catch of lobsters . The place has an important inland port . Another industry is the extraction of peat from nearby peat bogs.
