Espostoa hylaea is a species of plant in the genus Espostoa from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet is derived from the Greek word hylaios for 'belonging to the forest' and refers to their occurrence in forest areas.

description

Espostoa hylaea grows as a shrub with upright shoots 4 to 5 centimeters in diameter that branch from the base to the middle . There are 21 to 28 ribs that are 4 millimeters high and on which there are elongated areoles that are 3 to 4 millimeters apart and carry wool up to 1 centimeter long. The hardly recognizable central spines are occasionally up to 1 centimeter long. The 30 to 40 yellow to reddish radial spines are up to 5 millimeters in length. The cephalium is light brown.

The whitish flowers are 4 to 5 centimeters long and 4 to 6 centimeters in diameter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Espostoa hylaea is common in Peru in the Amazon region on the Río Marañón near Bagua at low altitudes around 500 meters.

It was first described in 1964 by Friedrich Ritter .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
