Essendon is a district of the Australian city of Melbourne . He belongs to the administrative area of City of Moonee Valley .
The area around Essendon was originally inhabited by Aborigines from the Kulin tribe. A post office was opened in 1856. In 1871 a rail link to Melbourne was established.
The well-known documentary filmmaker Stephen Robert Irwin (1962-2006) comes from Essendon.
