The Estadio Corona is a former football stadium in the city of Torreón , Coahuila , Mexico . It served the first division club Santos Laguna between July 1970 and November 2009 as a permanent home ground and since the 1988/89 season has been a regular venue for games of the Mexican Primera División . The new home ground of Club Santos Laguna has been the Estadio TSM Corona since November 11, 2009 .

history

The stadium was inaugurated on July 2, 1970 with a friendly between local CF Torreón and Mexico's most popular club, Chivas Guadalajara . The last game was a league game of the Primera División, which was played on November 1, 2009 between Santos Laguna and the UNAM Pumas . The last goal at the Estadio Corona was scored by Vicente Vuoso , who equalized for the hosts in the 66th minute to make it 1-1. The following day the demolition work began on what was once the smallest premier league stadium in Mexico.

The stadium users

In the first four years of its existence (seasons 1970/71 to 1973/74) the stadium served as the home ground of the then first division club CF Torreón until they sold their first division license. After that, CF Laguna played its home games here, before this club also sold its license in 1978 and the stadium remained largely unused for the next few years. Only after the founding of Club Santos Laguna and its entry into the then third-class Segunda División 'B' for the 1983/84 season did the stadium have a permanent user again, who has played its home games here ever since.

The names of the stadium

In its early days, the stadium was called Estadio Moctezuma , before it was officially renamed Estadio Corona in 1986 . The new name was chosen based on the beer brand of the same name from Grupo Modelo , which has been running a brewery in Torreón since 1967, in which the Corona brand is brewed. Unofficially, the stadium is also called El coloso de las Carolinas (the Colossus of Carolinas) after the district of the same name in which it is located.

Finals

In the Estadio Corona, one of the five finals of Santos Laguna was held for the Mexican football championship. Interestingly, Santos was always able to win the championship when the second leg was played at the Estadio Corona and always came away empty-handed when the first leg was already taking place here.
