The Estadio Francisco Villa is a stadium in Zacatecas , the capital of the state of the same name in Mexico . The stadium, which can be used for athletics and football events as well as for concerts , was named in memory of the Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa (1878–1923).

history

The stadium was opened in the run-up to the 1986 World Cup in Mexico , but was not a venue for this tournament. The team from the Universidad de Guadalajara and the South Korean national football team played the opening game . The first goal in the new stadium was scored by Francisco “Médico” Ríos for the team from Guadalajara to later win 1-0 .

On the fifth match day of the 1996/97 season, the stadium was the only venue for a first division match when Santos Laguna moved his home game against Chivas Guadalajara here. Mexico's international Jared Borgetti gave the hosts a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute, before Gustavo Nápoles equalized for the guests from Jalisco to make the final score 1-1 five minutes before the end of the game .

The stadium has already served as the home ground for several clubs from Zacatecas in the third and fourth leagues . In the seven years between 1996 and 2003 it was even the venue of the second division when the city's most famous club, Real Sociedad de Zacatecas , was represented in the Primera División 'A' .
