The Estadio La Nueva Balastera is a football stadium in the Spanish city ​​of Palencia in the autonomous community of Castile and León . It replaced the Estadio La Balastera , built in 1943 .

history

The venue was opened on October 10, 2006 with the U-21 play-off international match between Spain and Italy for the 2007 European Championship finals. Giorgio Chiellini scored the first goal in the stadium for Italy. From 2006 to 2012 it served as the home stadium of the former soccer club CF Palencia . The Palencia Rugby Club has played its games at the Estadio La Nueva Balastera since 2011. The soccer club CD Cristo Atlético from Palencia has been based in La Balastera since 2012 .

The Estadio La Nueva Balastera has space for 8,070 spectators, all of which are protected from wind and weather by a roof. The stadium was designed by Francisco "Patxi" Mangado. The most striking feature of the stadium, which opened in 2006, are the four light towers of the floodlight system . The stadium's design won the Grand Prix at the Enor Architecture Awards in 2007 .
