Estelle Reiner

Estelle Reiner (born Estelle Lebost; born June 5, 1914 ; † October 25, 2008 ) was an American actress and singer .

She was the wife of the director and actor Carl Reiner and mother of the director Rob Reiner as well as the writer Annie Reiner and the artist Lucas Reiner .

Life

Reiner was born Estelle Lebost in 1914 in the New York Bronx . At a young age she was active as a painter and artist. In 1943 she married Carl Reiner. The marriage had three children: Rob, Annie and Lucas Reiner.

After minor roles in comedies such as The Man with Two Brains or Hot on the Trot , a short but concise role followed in 1989 in the love comedy Harry and Sally, directed by her son Rob . In the famous scene in which Meg Ryan faked an orgasm as Sally , the older lady portrayed by Reiner at the next table asks the waiter “exactly what she had” (“I'll have what she's having”). The American Film Institute voted the sentence among the 100 best movie quotes from US films of all time at number 33.

The scene was filmed at Katz's Delicatessen on New York's Lower East Side . A sign positioned above the table picks up on Reiner's quote.

At the age of 65, Reiner began performing as a singer. Seven music albums were created between 1995 and 2004.

She died of natural causes on October 25, 2008 at the age of 94 in Beverly Hills, California.
