Estha Essombe

Estha Essombe (born April 20, 1963 in Boulogne-sur-Mer ) is a former French judoka . She won three medals at European championships.

Athletic career

The 1.70 m tall Estha Essombe fought in the light heavyweight division, the weight class up to 72 kilograms. She won a medal at the French championships for the first time in 1991 when she was second behind Laurence Sionneau . The strongest French judoka in the light heavyweight division, however, was Laetitia Meignan , who won the Tournoi de Paris in 1993 before Essombe. At the European Championships in Gdansk in 1994 Essombe defeated the Spaniard Cristina Curto in the quarter-finals and the British Kate Howey in the semifinals , in the final she was defeated by the Belgian Ulla Werbrouck . At the end of 1994 Estha Essombe won her only French championship title. In 1995 at the European Championships in Birmingham, Essombe defeated the Romanian Simona Richter in the quarter-finals and the Serbian Danojla Đurđevac in the semifinals . As in the previous year, Essombe lost the final against Ulla Werbrouck. At the 1995 World Championships in Chiba, she lost to the Cuban Diadenis Luna in the quarterfinals and ended up in seventh place.

The following year Essombe lost at the European Championships in 1996 in The Hague in the round of 16 against the Dutch Karin Kienhuis . Estha Essombe secured a bronze medal with victories in the hope round over the Russian Swetlana Galante , the Austrian Doris Pöllhuber and the British Kate Howey. At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, she defeated the Cuban world champion Diadenis Luna in the round of 16 and the Venezuelan Francis Gómez in the quarter-finals . In the semifinals she was defeated by the Japanese Yōko Tanabe , the fight for a bronze medal lost Essombe against the Italian Ylenia Scapin after 1:59 minutes. In 1997 Essombe finished seventh at the European Championships in Ostend. A month later, she met Ylena Scapin in the final of the Mediterranean Games and won the title. At the 1997 World Championships in Paris, Essombe reached the semi-finals by defeating Ulla Werbrouck. After defeats to the Japanese Noriko Anno and the Brazilian Edinanci Silva , Estha Essombe finished fifth in her last major tournament.
