Eszter Hargittai (born December 15, 1973 ) is a Hungarian - American sociologist and media scientist .

Life

Eszter Hargittai, daughter of the chemist and science historian István Hargittai and the chemist Magdolna Hargittai , grew up in Budapest . She studied sociology at Smith College , where she received a Bachelor of Arts in 1996 , and at Princeton University , where she graduated with a Master of Arts in 2000 . Also in Princeton, she received her Ph.D. in media sociology in 2003. PhD. From 2003 she was Assistant Professor , from 2008 Associate Professor and since 2013 she has been Professor at Northwestern University in Evanston , Illinois . On August 1, 2016, Eszter Hargittai was appointed to succeed Heinz Bonfadelli as Professor of Mass Communication at the University of Zurich .

Hargittai's research focuses on the social and political implications of information technology , with a particular interest in how information technology affects social inequality .
