Etienne Rolin

Etienne Rolin (born July 12, 1952 in Berkeley , California ) is a French musician (clarinet, saxophone, flute), composer and sculptor of American origin.

Career

Rolin studied philosophy and musicology at the University of San Francisco from 1970 to 1974. After workshops with Donatoni , Ligeti , Messiaen and Xenakis , he studied harmony and music analysis with Nadia Boulanger .

From 1979 Rolin worked as a teacher, a. a. at the ENM in Angoulême and was responsible for the ENM's jazz musician in Montauban from 1989 to 1995 . In 1985 he was appointed professor at the National Conservatory in Bordeaux. He has written more than 600 compositions, including commissioned works for the Ensemble intercontemporain , Accroch'Notes and 2E2M . As a musician, he was a member of numerous chamber music and improvisation ensembles such as Ensemble Polyfolia , Fine Tuning , Tribal Clarinet Trio and Cinégraphes (recordings with François Rossé, Louis Sclavis , Vinko Globokar , Daniel Humair , Antoine Hervé and Kent Carter ). In 1984 he released the album Portraits: Quartet et Orchester under his own name . He can still be heard on records from Rivière Composers' Pool .
