Conte Carlo Ettore Conte Arrigoni degli Oddi mostly Ettore Arrigoni degli Oddi (born October 13, 1867 in the Villa Ca'Oddo in Marcello, † February 16, 1942 in Bologna ) was an Italian ornithologist and politician .

Live and act

Ettore Arrigoni degli Oddi came from a noble family. His father, Count Oddo Arrigoni degli Oddi (1832–1907) married the noble Giovanna Piazzoni di Castel Cerreto. From the marriage, Ettore was the only child.

In the course of his scientific expeditions and hunting trips he amassed a considerable collection of birds in his parents' villa. Above all, it was the birds of the mountains that he loved. He generously displayed his collection to the public and made parts of his bellows available for study. When he z. B. Edgardo Moltoni visited his villa in 1930, illustrated it and showed him his perfectly prepared exhibits and rarities. For many copies, Vittorio Dal Nero (1862–1948) from Verona served as a taxidermist , who also accompanied him on many trips through Europe. These led them from northern to the Mediterranean region . Moltoni was particularly impressed by his collection of ducks.

He inherited his passion for hunting and ornithology from his father. His father started his collection with exotic and native birds and Ettore gradually expanded it. His father also published, for example, on anomalies in bird pines, on the natural history of birds, birds and agriculture and also on resident and migratory birds in the Padua and Venice region. He also made proposals for a new hunting law in the Kingdom of Italy .

Always in the vicinity of collectors and scholars, Ettore published a 13-page list of rare birds from the collection of Francesco Gallo at the age of 17 , which was published under the title Lettera aperta al chiarissimo signor dottore Enrico Hillyer Giglioli . Between 1884 and 1932 a number of notes and studies on avifauna appeared under his name. He spared no expense or travel stress to pursue his passion for ornithology.

His name is very closely associated with ornithology in Italy. In particular his works Atlante ornitologico: uccelli europei: con notizie d'indole generale e particolare from 1902, Manuale di ornitologia italiana; elenco descrittivo degli uccelli stazionari o di passaggio finora osservati in Italia from 1904 and Ornitologia italiana from 1929 earned him a high reputation in ornithologists' circles. The latter work is a fundamental revision of Manuale di ornitologia italiana , which he expanded to include trivial names and an extensive bibliography of Italian ornithology.

In 1930 he personally handed over his collection with many rarities to Benito Mussolini . In 1937 it went to the Storia Naturale annesso al Giardino Zoologico del Governatorato di Roma along with an ample library.

From 1913 to 1921 he served as a member of the Italian Parliament . He was also a full or corresponding member of many of the most important ornithological societies. He advised competently in various committees and thus followed the tradition of Italian ornithologists such as Paolo Savi (1798–1871), Enrico Hillyer Giglioli (1845–1909), Giacinto Martorelli (1855–1917) and Tommaso Salvadori (1835–1923).

On his private initiative, Rivista Italiana di Ornitologia was published again in 1931 , an ornithological journal that was founded in 1911 and had to be discontinued in 1925. In the same year neurasthenia forced him to give up his passion and eventually led to his death.
