Appearance and leaf

Eucalyptus macrocarpa grows exclusively in the form of the mallee - eucalyptus , this is a growth form that is more shrub -shaped than tree-shaped , there are usually several trunks that form a lignotuber ; it grows to heights of 0.8 to 5 meters. The bark is smooth and powdery white, gray or salmon to pink on the entire plant. There are no oil glands in the marrow of the young branches or in the bark.

In Eucalyptus macrocarpa , heterophyllia is present. The leaves are always divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. On middle-aged specimens, the leaf blade is broadly lanceolate to ovate, straight, with entire margins and a dull gray-green. The leaf blades floured or frosted blue-green on the top and bottom of the same color on adult specimens are straight, broadly lanceolate, elliptical or egg-shaped, relatively thick, with entire margins and they can be heart-shaped or rounded at the base of the blade or taper towards the base of the blade; their upper end is blunt, rounded or edged. The side nerves, which are barely visible, extend from the median nerve at an obtuse angle. The cotyledons ( cotyledons ) are in two parts.

Inflorescence, flower and fruit

On the side of an inflorescence stem that is round in cross section, there is only one large flower in a simple inflorescence . The flower bud is egg-shaped and not floured or frosted blue-green. The sepals form a calyptra that falls off early. The smooth calyptra is hemispherical or conical, three times as long as the smooth flower cup (hypanthium) and just as wide as this. The flower is creamy white pink or red. The flowering period in Western Australia ranges from August to December, January, April or June.

The fruit is hemispherical or spindle-shaped, the disc is raised and the fruit fans protrude.

Natural range

Occurrence

Eucalyptus macrocarpa is found in the southwest and west of Western Australia . Eucalyptus macrocarpa occurs in the independent administrative districts of Bruce Rock , Coorow and Quairading in the Mid West and Wheatbelt regions .

Eucalyptus macrocarpa grows on gray sand or sandy loam soils over laterite on slopes, on ridges or in sand plains.

Systematics

The first description of Eucalyptus macrocarpa was made in 1842 by William Jackson Hooker in Icones Plantarum , Volume 5, panels 405, 406 and 407. The type material has the caption " Guangan; Swan River Colony, Australia. Mr. J. Drummond ”. The specific epithet macrocarpa is composed of the ancient Greek words "macro" for large and "carpos" for fruit.

There are two subspecies of Eucalyptus macrocarpa Hook .:

  • Eucalyptus macrocarpa subsp. elachantha Brooker & Hopper, Syn .: Eucalyptus macrocarpa subsp. elachantha Brooker & Hopper nom. inval .: smaller fruits (diameter <45 mm)
  • Eucalyptus macrocarpa Hook. subsp. macrocarpa : larger fruits (diameter> 47 mm)

There are natural hybrids of Eucalyptus macrocarpa with Eucalyptus drummondii and Eucalyptus pyriformis .

use

Eucalyptus macrocarpa is used as an ornamental plant in gardens because of its large, colorful flowers and its shrub-like growth. It needs a dry soil (no waterlogging) and a frost-free climate. Then it can be easily grown from seed.
