Eugène Lefébure

Eugène Lefébure (born November 11, 1838 in Prunoy , Yonne , † April 9, 1908 in Algiers ) was a French Egyptologist .

Lefébure first worked at the post office. After the early death of his wife, he worked on Egyptology and studied with François Chabas . From 1879 he taught in Lyon, from 1880 he worked for the French excavation mission in Cairo , of which he became director in 1881. Two years later he was to create a map of the Valley of the Kings on behalf of Auguste Mariette . He documented the graves of Seti I ( KV17 ) and Ramses IV. ( KV2 ) and also created the plans for the graves KV26 , KV27 , KV28 , KV29 , KV37 , KV40 , KV59 , WV24 and WV25 . From 1885 to 1889 he published his work in four volumes with the title Les Hypogées royaux de Thèbes . In 1883 he returned to Lyon for health reasons and taught from 1885 as the successor to Eugène Grébaut at the École du Louvre . Shortly afterwards he went to the University of Algiers, where he taught until his death. He was a close friend of Stéphane Mallarmé .
