KV27 ( Kings' Valley no. 27 ) refers to an ancient Egyptian tomb in the Valley of the Kings , which, like some other tombs, was discovered before 1832. The owner of the grave is unknown.
Location and architecture
The KV21 and KV28 are nearby . The entrance shaft, combined with a corridor, ends directly in a rectangular chamber, from which three further chambers branch off. One chamber faces south, the other two west. The 91.87 m² grave is roughly comparable in design to KV5 , KV12 and KV30 . Small stone carvings on the east wall of the southernmost side chamber suggest preparations for creating another room or a niche. KV27 has neither wall decorations nor hieroglyphic inscriptions.
Research and Publication
The tomb was believed to have been visited by Giovanni Battista Belzoni and John Gardner Wilkinson (1925–1928), although it was not noted on their own maps. A short description can be found by Eugène Lefébure . No work was done on the tomb until it was excavated by Donald P. Ryan for Pacific Lutheran University in 1990. Ryan documented that the tomb had been flooded at least seven times and that rubble and boulders reached the ceiling in some rooms.
Finds and dating
Lefébure's records mention the remains of mummies "of uncertain age", but they are not described in detail. In room Bc, one of the two west-facing rooms, there was a small selection of ceramics that refer to the reigns of kings Thutmose IV and Amenophis III. Clues. An exact dating of the construction of the grave is difficult because of the lack of clear allocation features. Due to the proximity to the graves KV20 ( Thutmose I and Hatshepsut ) and KV43 (Thutmosis IV) in the same side wadi of the valley and the similar grave type, the dating tends to be around the middle of the 18th dynasty ( New Kingdom ).
