In KV12 is an ancient Egyptian undecorated family grave in the middle of the 18th dynasty . It is located in the Valley of the Kings on the wadi leading to the grave ( KV35 ) of Amenophis II .

exploration

The grave was already known at the time of Richard Pococke , a first report was made between 1820 and 1840 by James Burton . The grave was initially filled with rubble, which over time was cleared away by unknown excavators. Further excavations were carried out by Harold Jones (1908–1909), Howard Carter (1920–1921) and Otto Schaden (1993–1994), but they did not produce any significant finds.

Burton found mummy remains inside the tomb as well as graffito on the wall of a chamber. The body was probably buried in the final chamber. According to John Romer , in antiquity this was sealed with clay plaster. At the entrance, Jones et al. a. two calcite - shabtis , which from the tomb of Ramses VI. come. Workers who were KV9 probably at the time of Ramses VI. gouged out, accidentally broke through into the end chamber.

construction

Isometric representation, floor plan and sectional drawing of the tomb

The tomb consists of several chambers and is approximately 90 m long. It runs from south to north and has a laterally offset entrance. The entrance is followed by a hall with a single pillar , several unfinished branches and a staircase. The outer chambers are roughly hewn, while the inner chambers are more carefully worked. The passage to the north is a staircase with side ramps , similar to royal tombs. The lower part of KV12 is asymmetrical, but the outlines of doors that have not been chiseled out can be seen around the central main chamber. A balanced arrangement of the side chambers was probably intended, but was not completed. The irregularity in the adjoining rooms is due to impenetrable rock veins.
