KV37 is an ancient Egyptian tomb in the Valley of the Kings . The owner of the grave is unknown. Based on the location and layout, it is likely a royal tomb. It is used in the reign of King ( Pharaoh ) Thutmose III. ( 18th Dynasty , New Kingdom ) dated. Findings suggest that it was used as a pantry by grave robbers .

Research and Publication

The discovery of KV37 is attributed to Victor Loret in 1899 , after having been visited by James Burton in 1825 and Eugène Lefébure in 1889 . Lefébure drew up the first plans while the excavations were carried out by Loret in 1899 for the Service des Antiquités , now the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA). The results of the excavations were published by Georges Daressy in Fouilles des la Vallée des Roi 1898–1899 . Further investigations by Elizabeth Thomas followed in the 1960s .

Location and architecture

Isometric representation, floor plan and sectional drawing of the tomb

KV37 lies below KV34 , the grave of Thutmose III. The completely undecorated grave consists of an entrance with steps that lead through a corridor into a burial chamber.

Finds and interpretation

The finds in the grave include human remains in the form of bone fragments, large, white storage jugs, as well as sculptures and documents. During his excavation work, Victor Loret found a mummy-shaped wooden statuette and base fragments with the name of Thutmose IV , a friction wood for lighting a fire, as well as 33 ostracas and a vessel fragment bearing the name of Seti I.

The objects found indicate subsequent burials, but can also mean that the grave at a certain point in time, similar to KV4 , the grave of Ramses XI. , was used as a "workshop". Based on the various finds, Elizabeth Thomas suspected that KV37 was used as a pantry by grave robbers.
