Eugène Joseph Verboeckhoven (born June 8, 1799 in Warneton in West Flanders (today Hainaut ), † January 19, 1881 in Schaerbeek / Schaarbeek ) was a Belgian landscape and animal painter .

Life

Verboeckhoven learned drawing and embossing from his father Barthélemy Verboeckhoven , a sculptor († 1840 in Brussels). His brother was the marine painter Charles-Louis Verboeckhoven (1802-1889). Eugène Verboeckhoven became known in 1821 through the cattle market in Ghent (De Beestenmarkt te Gent) , a large painting in which he performed the animal decorations for Pieter Frans de Noter (1779–1842). In 1847 he founded a studio in Brussels, from which a large number of animal pieces, especially landscapes with sheep, emerged. It was characterized by careful drawing and elegant, smooth painting. Famous in the 1850s for its graceful depiction of the ungulates, it was later pushed into the background by the realistic direction. Verboeckhoven also etched 22 sheets with pieces of animals. In addition to singular works, he worked on some paintings together with the painters Jan Baptiste de Jonghe and Henry Campotosto . Verboeckhoven went on study trips to Germany and England, and later to France and Italy. He died on January 19, 1881.
