Eugen Keidel Tower

The Eugen Keidel Tower , also known as the Schauinsland tower , is a 31 meter high observation tower on the summit of the Schauinsland .

The building is characterized by its unusual shape: the triangular platform is supported by three Douglas fir trees cut in the Freiburg city forest on the Schauinsland, between which an open steel staircase leads up 85 steps to a covered platform about 22 meters high; From here you have a comprehensive panoramic view of the southern Upper Rhine Plain and - in good weather - of the Vosges , over the Black Forest with the Feldberg to the east and - on a clear day - as far as the Swiss Alps . A circular route of around two kilometers leads from the mountain station of the Schauinsland cable car to the tower. Many other hiking trails also lead here.

The tower was built in 1981. It is named after Eugen Keidel (1909–1991), who was Lord Mayor of Freiburg im Breisgau from 1962 to 1982 .
