Eugene Fox
Eugen Fox (born August 29, 1911 in Duisburg , † September 19, 1988 in Xanten ) was a German poet and photographer.
Career
His childhood was marked by the turmoil of the First World War. He spent the first years of his life in Lüttingen , Cologne and Malmedy . In Malmedy he attended the Athénée Royal Ardenne and trained as an electrician. The draft for military service in World War II forced him to leave Belgium. He returned to Xanten from Denmark in May 1945 and started his own business there as a master electrician.
His help in rebuilding the city of Xanten was not limited to clearing rubble and providing electricity. Rather, he was also interested in the city's social life. In June 1949 he founded the Xanten chess club together with his friend, the painter Gustav Ruhnau, a member of the Niederrheinischer Künstlerbund . In 1956 he gave up his self-employment and was employed at the Rheinhausen iron and steel works .
His greatest commitment was to protect children. In December 1965 he founded the first local association of the German Child Protection Association on the Lower Rhine. He not only took care of the well-being of individual children, but also organized a large number of lectures in collaboration with Elisabeth Trube-Becker , forensic doctor at the University of Düsseldorf, to make violence and abuse cases public. In October 1976, District Administrator Werner Röhrich presented him with the Federal Cross of Merit for his services .
A large number of black and white photographs of life in Xanten in the 1950s and 1960s were found in his estate. They show the beauty of the everyday and the small moments of happiness. There are different series: the work on Xanten Cathedral , life on the streets of Xanten and the children, to whom he paid a lot of attention. The Rheinische Bildarchiv in Cologne has taken over 90 photographs .
His love for Xanten and the beauty of everyday life is also expressed in his poems, sonnets and dialect poems "op Santes Platt". They were published in 1990 in the book Farewell in Autumn by Brendow Verlag . For one of these poems he won 2nd prize in the 3rd international poetry competition and was awarded the Immortal Rose medal in May 1981 in Witten an der Ruhr .
Eugen Fox died at the age of 77 on September 19, 1988 in Xanten.
