Eugen Gebele OSB (born April 10, 1836 in Osterbuch , today a district of Laugna ; † August 8, 1903 in Augsburg ) was a Catholic priest, Benedictine abbot and abbot president of the Bavarian Benedictine Congregation .

Life

The son of a carpenter was born as Ernst Gebele in the Swabian Osterbuch and attended high school near St. Stephan in Augsburg . Gebele studied theology at Dillingen University and was ordained a priest on July 21, 1861 . Initially a secular priest, he worked as a chaplain in Langenreichen and Marktoberdorf , and from 1863 at St. Maximilian in Augsburg.

In 1868 the clergyman joined the St. Stephan Abbey in Augsburg and became a Benedictine . On June 6, 1869, Gebele took the religious vows and was given the name Eugene .

In 1870 he received his doctorate in philosophy from the University of Munich. From that year until 1889, Gebele taught philosophy, history and geography at the Augsburg high school near Sankt Stephan. As the successor to Priest Georg Razinger, he took over the role of preacher at the study church for the three Munich high schools by a ministerial resolution of March 21, 1869. With a rescipt of January 17, 1871, he was relieved of this position upon request; His successor was the priest Georg Schmiduber, beneficiary of St. Peter in Munich. Because of a sore throat, he finally had to give up teaching.

On March 11, 1889, he was elected Abbot of St. Stephan of Augsburg, and on April 28 of that year he received the benediction . At the same time he was also the prior of the branch monastery Ottobeuren . In 1897 Gebele was promoted to Abbot President of the Bavarian Benedictine Congregation, i.e. the highest-ranking Benedictine in Bavaria. He held all offices until his death. Eugen Gebele died completely unexpectedly on August 8, 1903, after a short period of malaise with a heartbeat , as the obituary puts it.

He published several historical treatises. The best known is the work published in 1870: Life and Work of Bishop Hermann von Augsburg .
