Eugene Gelcich

Eugen Gelcich (born January 14, 1854 in Cattaro , Austrian Empire , † July 14, 1915 in Vienna , Austria-Hungary ) was an Austrian nautical instructor. As a meritorious organizer of Austria's nautical education, he was internationally renowned.

Life

Gelcich's father Vicenzo Gelcich was a professor of mathematics and nautical science in Cattaro. The mother was Catterina Reggio .

Gelcich attended the Fiume Naval Academy from 1866 to 1870 . As a naval officer in the Austrian Navy , he drove to East Asia on the SMS Fasana screw corvette . At times he worked at the hydrographic office in Pola . In 1878 he joined the Austrian Merchant Navy as a teacher and provisional director of the Cattaro nautical school . With his excellent pedagogical talent, he became director of the nautical school in Lussinpiccolo in 1881 . In 1895 he came to the Academy of Commerce and Nautical Science in Trieste as head of the nautical department . From 1896 he was also the inspector of the nautical schools in the Austrian coastal regions . In Trieste he became head of the entire academy in 1899 and director in 1901. In 1901 he was appointed to the Ministry of Cultus and Education . From 1903 he was the central inspector for commercial teaching. From 1907 to 1909 he was at the same time advisor to the Ministry of Commerce for shipping and nautical questions and sat on the commission for the economic development of Dalmatia . In 1910 he retired as inspector of the nautical and some of the commercial schools as well as director of their teaching examination committees. He died at the age of 61.
