kuk marine section

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The imperial and royal naval section , wrongly referred to as kk until 1889 like the army from 1867 , then kuk , was a department of the War Ministry in the Austrian Empire and from 1867 in Austria-Hungary . She was responsible for the affairs of the Kriegsmarine . It consisted of the administrative branch in Vienna , the subordinate fleet command in Pola , the largest naval port and naval base , and other offices at home and abroad.

The aim of the navy to re-establish its own naval ministry (it had existed with Friedrich Moritz von Burger as minister only 1862-1865, at that time responsible for the war and merchant navy) stood in the way of the Austro-Hungarian settlement of 1867, the only three common for the entire dual monarchy provided responsible ministries. The politicians of Hungary did not want a fourth joint ministry or had stipulated that two of the four joint ministries should then be set up in Budapest, which the Austrian government refused.

The naval affairs therefore had to continue to be administered in the War Department; However, like the short-lived Ministry of Navy before the end of the monarchy, the naval section was housed separately. (Section is the term used in Austria to this day for organizational units of a ministry that report directly to the minister.)

Chiefs of the Marine Section and Naval Commanders

Before the establishment of the dual monarchy in 1867, the following were active in management positions:

  • Archduke Ferdinand Max , naval commander 1854–1860; 1860–1864 Section Head - he had to resign because of the acceptance of the Crown of Mexico (April 10, 1864).
  • Ludwig von Fautz , 1860–1865 naval commander, from July 1865 (with the abolition of the naval ministry) to March 1868 section chief.

In the dual monarchy, the two functions were filled in personal union until February 8, 1917. The head of the section acted as the deputy of the (Reich) Minister of War in naval matters and had the right to ask the Austrian and Hungarian delegations (of the respective parliament), which were in the same city (Vienna or Budapest), but in separate meetings, on the budget proposal for the kuk Marine had to decide to speak directly and answer questions put by delegates.

According to Lehmann's Vienna address book (e.g. 1868 and 1871), the naval section was, as before the 1862–1865 incumbent Imperial and Royal Navy Ministry (see above) in the 1st district at Schenkenstrasse 14 (behind the new building of the Burgtheater ), from 1874 on in Doblhoffgasse 7 behind the Reichsratsgebäude built between 1874 and 1883 . In 1887 the naval section was relocated to the address 9, Währinger Straße 6 and 8, opposite the Votive Church , where it remained until the new building built for it was moved into.

In 1908 the naval section was designed according to plans by Theodor Bach (Wiener Baugesellschaft; * 1858 Vienna, † 1938 Prague) and naval chief engineer Camillo Flat and built for it by Ettore Fenderl (* 1862 Trieste, † 1966 Vittorio Veneto) and Friedrich Reichel since 1906 representative corner house with two entrances on the 3rd  Vienna district , highway established. The main architectural portal was located at Vorderen Zollamtstrasse  9 with a view of the Wien River , on the other bank of which, beyond the Kleiner Marxerbrücke with the main front on the Stubenring, the new main building of the Austro-Hungarian War Ministry was built. The entrance actually used was located around the corner on the left, at Marxergasse 2, where tram lines 77 and K ran to the Stubenring. The postal address was also on Marxergasse.

At the height of the first floor, the facade is decorated with enamelled coats of arms of 16  Adriatic ports of the monarchy : Zara / Zadar , Fiume / Rijeka , Pola / Pula , Trieste , Cattaro / Kotor , Lissa / Vis , Spalato / Split , Sebenico / Šibenik , Capodistria / Koper , Lesina / Hvar , Muggia , Lussinpiccolo / Mali Lošinj , Cherso / Cres , Rovigno / Rovinj , Pirano / Piran and Ragusa / Dubrovnik ; Fiume belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary , the other 15 were in the Austrian half of the empire . (The Italian names were officially used in the navy at that time.)

On November 12, 1918, the former Austro-Hungarian War Ministry was converted by the Renner I state government of the new state of German Austria into a liquidating ministry under the supervision of the State Office (= Ministry) for the Army; since April 1920 the term military liquidation office was used for it. This also affected the now liquidating naval section , which was still working in its building for some time after 1918 to deal with personnel and material matters of the no longer existing Austrian navy. (The Military Liquidation Office was not dissolved until 1931.)

From 1925 the office building housed the general management of the Austrian Federal Forests , which later moved to Purkersdorf . Today the Federal Agency for Agriculture is located here . The coat of arms of Adriatic ports on the facade and a plaque in the driveway remind of the original function.
