Friedrich von Pöck

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Friedrich Freiherr von Pöck (born August 19, 1825 in Szobotist , Neutra County , Kingdom of Hungary, today Slovakia, † September 25, 1884 in Feldhof near Graz ) was admiral and commander of the Austrian Navy .

Life

He was born as the son of Colonel iP Freiherr von Pöck (born May 26, 1787 in Iglau , † September 23, 1862 in Ödenburg ) and Marie Freifrau Horeczky von Kraszna-Horka and Koricsan in Neutra. Coming from a soldier's family, he joined the Naval Cadet College in Venice in August 1837 as an arial pupil and was retired from the KK Kriegsmarine on August 1, 1843. He first distinguished himself during the siege of Venice in 1849 and was praised by Corvette Captain Ludwig von Fautz . He proved himself as a ship commander, and his former commandant, later Vice-Admiral Fautz , certified that he had a good job description. As the commander of the Novara he had the opportunity to confirm this opinion during the circumnavigation of the earth under Bernhard von Wüllerstorf-Urbair . In 1860 he briefly commanded the Lake Garda flotilla and then the Kaiser liner, which had just entered service .

Since 1869 Tegetthoff's deputy as head of the marine section, Pöck was initially provisional after his death, and from 1872 he was definitely his successor. The Pöck era is generally judged unfavorably - he was without vigor, intellectual interests and technical knowledge. At the beginning he still benefited from the innovations and Tegetthoff's building program, but did little to achieve it himself. On September 18, 1882, Pöck was appointed second admiral of the Austrian Navy to Bourguignon .

In early November 1883 he suffered a nervous breakdown, was retired, and is believed to have died of a mental disorder . It remains open in the historiography whether he chose suicide .
