Rudolf Graf von Montecuccoli (born February 22, 1843 in Modena ; † May 16, 1922 in Baden near Vienna ) was an Austro-Hungarian admiral and naval commander . He came from the family of the Imperial Counts Montecuccoli, who originally lived in the Duchy of Modena .
Life
Rudolf Count Montecuccoli degli Erri graduated from the Naval Academy and entered service in 1859 as a provisional naval cadet and active applicant for a career in the Austro-Hungarian Navy . In 1866 he was promoted to ensign of the liner . He distinguished himself in the same year in the naval battle of Lissa . In 1885 he was promoted to captain of the corvette , and in 1892 to captain of the liner . From 1894 to 1895 he was head of the military naval control office in Vienna , and in 1897 he was promoted to admiral . In 1900 he commanded the newly established Austrian East Asia squadron, which was created for Austria-Hungary's participation in the suppression of the Boxer Rebellion . From 1901 he was President of the Naval Technical Committee and from 1905 Admiral .
During his tenure as fleet commander from 1904, the modern battleships of the Viribus Unitis class , the rapid cruisers and other modern units, such as the destroyers of the Tátra class and submarines , were procured and naval aviation was promoted. This created the modern fleet with which the Austro-Hungarian Navy entered the First World War . On his 70th birthday in 1913 he resigned from his position as fleet commander and went into retirement.
He is buried in the Helenenfriedhof in Baden .
