Eugen Carl Kastner (born January 5, 1897 in Vienna ; † May 28, 1945 there ) was an Austrian architect .

Life

Kastner was the son of an officer who often had to change his place of work. Hence it came about that Eugen Kastner first attended the cadet school in Preßburg and then the secondary school in Bielitz , before he came back to Vienna after the death of his father. In 1915 he was called up for military service and served on the Italian front between 1916 and 1918. He ended the war as a lieutenant in the reserve.

In 1919 he attended the building school and studied architecture at the Technical University in Vienna. After traveling through former countries of the monarchy in 1921/22, he worked in various architectural offices (including Robert Oerley ). In 1928 he passed the civil engineering examination and went into business for himself with his friend and fellow student Fritz Waage .

With the construction of the Favoriten substation and the Dorotheum Floridsdorf, the two architects gained a good reputation, especially in industrial construction. But they also dealt with inexpensive housing developments. In 1933 Kastner applied in vain for the position of director of the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna. In order to receive further orders, he was a member of the Fatherland Front from 1936 to 1938 and of the Reichskunstkammer from 1939 to 1945 . Kastner was repeatedly called up for military service from 1942 and died shortly before the end of the war as a member of the Volkssturm under unexplained circumstances.

Together with Fritz Waage, Eugen Kastner is one of the most important representatives of the Austrian architecture scene in the interwar period. Their buildings range in style from Expressionism to New Objectivity to a modernist Heimat style.
