Fritz Waage (born May 21, 1898 in Ilok , Slavonia , † May 13, 1968 in Vienna ) was an Austrian architect .

Life

Fritz Waage was born in Slavonia as the son of an estate manager. He attended high school in Vienna and did his military service in World War I, during which he was wounded. After the war he began to study architecture at the Technical University with Leopold Simony and others. From 1920 to 1921 he was an intern in the architecture class of Josef Hoffmann at the School of Applied Arts in Vienna.

From 1923 to 1928, Waage worked in Hubert Gessner's office , where he found no opportunity to develop. Only during the construction of the Lassalle-Hof did he have a little more influence as site manager. In 1928, Waage went into business for himself with his fellow student Eugen Kastner . With the construction of the Favoriten substation, the two immediately gained general recognition in the professional world. A number of other industrial buildings followed, as well as residential buildings and interior fittings. What part of the buildings Kastner made and what kind of scales can usually no longer be determined today. Fritz Waage, however, is regarded as the theoretician of the two and also as the one who had social contacts and brought in orders.

Fritz Waage had been a National Socialist since 1932, but he joined the Fatherland Front from 1935 to 1938 so as not to endanger the joint architecture office with Kastner. After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich, his political convictions did not of course hinder the order situation, although the architects were already recognized experts in the field of industrial construction. Nevertheless, in the meantime, both were also repeatedly engaged in military service.

After 1945, Waage was banned from working for several years due to his political stance. During this time he dealt with various technical inventions and invented a safety binding for skis. Since his previous partner Kastner had fallen in 1945, he started a studio partnership with the architect Wolfgang Kroupa at the end of the 1940s. Due to the increased need for construction in the post-war period, both were well occupied with orders and were also commissioned by the municipality of Vienna with residential construction projects. Fritz Waage worked as an architect well into his old age.

Fritz Waage's buildings were characterized by a functionalist sobriety. He was always open to technical innovations. He is one of the most important architects in Vienna of his time.
