Eugene Mattes

Eugen Mattes (born July 3, 1904 in Kreuzlingen ; † October 7, 1980 ; resident in Bonau ) was a Swiss writer .

life and work

Eugen Mattes was the fourth of seven children of a shoemaker and grocer . When he was ten, he wrote his first verses. Because of his mother's lung disease, the family moved to Flums -Grossberg. The older siblings were hired out by farmers and Mattes looked after the grazing animals of the local farmers.

When Mattes was fourteen years old, the family moved back to the Kreuzlingen area. Here he worked in a dairy and attended primary school in between. After this he came to work as a laborer in a large bookbindery and later he worked in a sanatorium in Braunwald . When Mattes was seventeen, he took up an apprenticeship in Walenstadt with a baker and confectioner. After completing his apprenticeship, he worked in Pontresina , Romanshorn , Glarus , Brugg and Zurich . After eight years of professional activity, he worked for the municipal waterworks in Zurich and in 1929 joined the service as a controller of the urban tram in Zurich .

Mattes received the Swiss Schiller Foundation Prize in 1943 , several encouragement prizes from the City of Zurich, and in 1947 the Conrad Ferdinand Meyer Prize .
