Eugen Ostwald

Eugen Ostwald (born October 23, 1851 in Riga ; † February 12, 1932 there ) was a German-Baltic forest scientist .

Life

Ostwald's family lived in the Baltic Governments . As the son of a cooper , Ostwald studied from 1869 to 1872 at the Tharandt Forestry University . In 1871 he became a corps bow bearer of Hubertia Tharandt. After seven years as a forester in Olai , he looked after the extensive forest property of the city of Riga from 1879 to 1906 . From 1878 to 1902 he was also a lecturer at the Riga Polytechnic . In 1907 he founded the Livonian Forest Office, which he headed from 1914. In the same year he founded the Baltic Forest Research Station, which he headed from 1920. The University of Latvia appointed him in 1920 aso. Professor . In 1930 he retired .

The son Heinrich Ostwald (1877–1950) was a forester in East Prussia and professor at the Humboldt University in Berlin . The chemist and Nobel Prize winner Wilhelm Ostwald is a brother.
