Eugen Sacharias (in Estonia Eugen Saarelinn , born April 21, 1906 in Berlin , Germany ; † March 13, 2002 in Adelaide , Australia ) was a German - Estonian architect .

Life

Eugen Sacharias studied from 1925 to 1931 at the Technical University in the Czechoslovak capital, Prague . In 1931/32 he worked in the Tallinn office of the well-known architect Eugen Habermann (1884–1944). Then Sacharias founded his own architectural office in Estonia .

In 1941, Sacharias, who had taken the Estonian surname Saarelinn, fled to Germany from the Soviet terror. He lived in Berlin , Gleiwitz and Werneck . From Germany he went to Australia in 1949, where he worked as an architect until his death.

Eugen Sacharias was one of the most important and influential planners of residential architecture in Tallinn and Estonia in the 1930s. His style was functionalist at first . It was not until the second half of the 1930s that more representative Art Nouveau elements became visible. He also built some sacred buildings.

As one of the first architects in Estonia, Sacharias used native marble from Vasalemma to design the facade .
