Eugene Tanner

Eugen Tanner (born April 23, 1896 in Herisau , † October 25, 1978 in Basel ; legal resident in Herisau) was a Swiss textile entrepreneur and politician from the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Life

Eugen Tanner was a son of Eugen Tanner, embroidery entrepreneur , local councilor and cantonal councilor , and Jeanne Heer. In 1921 he married Marianne Burckhart, daughter Albrecht Burckhardt . He graduated from high school in St. Gallen . This was followed by training as a businessman in the French and Spanish-speaking areas. In 1922 Tanner received the power of attorney in the embroidery company run by his father and uncle, which he had to liquidate in 1934 as a result of the textile crisis. Then he was a partner in the textile trading company Sturzenegger & Tanner in St. Gallen. As a member of the Progressive Citizens' Party, later the Free Democratic Party , he was a councilor in Herisau from 1934 to 1939. He sat on the Cantonal Council from 1939 to 1943. From 1943 to 1954 Tanner served as Ausserrhoder government councilor in the economics department and from 1951 in the education department. He was President of the Conference of Education and Economics Directors in Switzerland. Tanner chaired the supervisory commission of the Herisau sanatorium and was a co-founder of the Saalbau zum Casino Herisau foundation .
