Eugene of Gothard

Eugen von Gothard (born May 31, 1857 in Herény in Western Hungary ; † May 29, 1909 there ), Hungarian Gothard Jenő , was a Hungarian nobleman and amateur astronomer . He studied at the Technical University in Vienna, especially with the astronomers Herr and Tinter. He built a large astrophysical observatory on his Hereny estate. He owned a reflecting telescope and was already using spectrometry.

From the 1880s he did pioneering work in the field of astronomical photography . On September 1, 1886 , he first photographed the central star of the ring nebula M57 in the constellation Lyra . Its scientific heritage is preserved by the Gothard Astrophysical Observatory at Loránd Eötvös University .

In 1980 the asteroid (1710) Gothard was named after him.
