Eulace Peacock
Eulace Peacock (born August 27, 1914 in Dothan , Alabama , † December 13, 1996 ) was an American athlete who was successful in the years before and during World War II as a sprinter, long jumper and pentathlete. On August 6, 1934, he was the 6th runner to run the 100 m in 10.3 seconds in Oslo and repeated this performance exactly one year later in Basel . This was also the last world record setting before Jesse Owens became the sole world record holder with 10.2 seconds in June 1936 .
Life
Eulace Peacock was the son of James Peacock and Rose Ann Chambers. He had two brothers: James, who was a sprinter and football player at Temple University , and Clarence, a Rutgers University student and hurdler. Eulace initially operated long jump. At the age of 11, he jumped an excellent 18 feet and never lost a single long jump competition at Union High School - the family had moved to Union , New Jersey in 1923 . His student record of 24-4.5, set in 1933, was the Union High School record until 1983. In the sprint, he recorded best times of 9.7 seconds (100 y) and 21.7 seconds (220 y). At Temple University it rose to 9.5 seconds and jumped 26-3 - achievements that remained unbroken as student records until 1989. In 1935 he was able to defeat Jesse Owens 7 times in a total of 10 sprint duels, and at the AAU Championships in Lincoln , Nebraska , he defeated him in both the sprint and long jump. The expected duel at the X Summer Olympics in Berlin in 1936 did not take place, however, as Peacock had to forego participation due to injury.
After graduating, Peacock worked for the New York City Board of Education . From 1942 to 1945 he served in the Coast Guard. Together with Jesse Owens, he founded the Owens and Peacock Company, which is active in the meat trade, and opened his own liquor store in New York in 1947. In addition, he worked as a dog breeder and as a judge.
