Eulychnia ritteri is a species of plant in the genus Eulychnia from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet ritteri honors the German cactus specialist Friedrich Ritter .

description

Eulychnia ritteri grows tree-like to shrubby, branches richly from the base and reaches heights of growth of up to 3 meters. The green shoots have a diameter of 6 to 8 centimeters. The close together and almost flowing, wide areoles are covered with long tufts of white wool. The thorns emerging from them are brown to black. The 1 to 4 strong, downward-pointing central spines are 3 to 6 centimeters long, the up to 12 thin radial spines 1 to 2 centimeters long.

The white to slightly pink flowers are 6 to 7.5 centimeters long and can reach a diameter of up to 1.5 centimeters. Your pericarpel and tube are covered with white wool and green scales. The spherical, greenish orange fruits have a diameter of up to 3 centimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Eulychnia ritteri is common in the Peruvian region of Arequipa near Chala along the coast. It was first described in 1958 by Willy Cullmann .
