The black- capped bulldog bat ( Eumops auripendulus ) is a species of bat from the family of bulldog bats , which is native to Central and South America and Jamaica .

description

It is a medium-sized bulldog bat with a head-to-trunk length of 142–146 mm and a weight of 26–27 g in Bolivia and 31.5–36.8 g in Paraguay. The males are usually larger than the females. The back fur is short, dark brown to black, sometimes reddish, with a white base. The fur on the stomach is also short, but lighter than the fur on the back. The ears are dark with a pointed tragus which is smaller than other Eumops species. The feet have hair that is longer than the claws and half of the tail extends beyond the tail membrane. The males have a throat pouch, which is only rudimentary in the females .

Way of life

Little is known about the species. Like most bats, the black-capped bulldog bat is nocturnal and feeds primarily on insects. During the day, the animals hide under loose tree bark or in the roofs of buildings. The females are polyestrial .

distribution

The black-capped bulldog bat occurs from southern Mexico to northern Argentina , as well as Jamaica . Thanks to their widespread use, the IUCN classifies their population as safe.
