The European Academy for Freedom of Information and Data Protection e. V. ( EAID ) is an association founded in 2003 and based in Berlin .

Goal setting

EAID sees itself as a platform for strategic discussions between science, politics and society on the future of freedom of information and data protection in Germany and Europe. EAID is on friendly terms with the European Academy Berlin (EAB), in whose premises in Berlin-Grunewald it also organizes events.

The then Berlin data protection officer Hansjürgen Garstka initiated the establishment of EAID in 2003 and was its first chairman until 2013; then he was elected honorary chairman. Garstka was followed by the former Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information, Peter Schaar, at the head of EAID. Since October 2015, the board has been made up of Peter Schaar (chairman), the Berlin data protection officer Alexander Dix (deputy chairman), Alfred Büllesbach and Dennis-Kenji Kipker . Events

Since it was founded, EAID has held a large number of events on fundamental questions of freedom of information and data protection. In 2003 EAID initiated the establishment of the International Conference of Freedom of Information Commissioners (ICIC), which brings together freedom of information commissioners from all over the world. On September 20, 2013, on the fringes of the 8th ICIC in Berlin, EAID held a discussion event on the prospects for the right to access information. On January 27, 2014, together with the European Academy Berlin, she organized an information and discussion event on the subject of IT security. On May 22, 2014, she held a colloquium on the work of the German legal informatics specialist and theologian Wilhelm Steinmüller . The most recent event of the association was a workshop on the international aspects of data retention, which took place on October 14, 2015 in the Berlin House of Representatives . In November 2017, EAID discussed the data protection and economic consequences of the ePrivacy Regulation in Europe.
