The Grünauerstraße is a traffic route in Berlin , who in the 19th century as a connection between Cöpenick and Grunau was born. It runs on the west bank of the Dahme between the Köllnischer Platz / Rudower Straße / Lange Brücke (north) over the Vollkropfgraben to the Grünauer bridge on the later Teltow Canal (south). In the district of Grünau it turns into Regattastraße .

history

The exact date of the designation is not known. The route was entered on Berlin city maps between the Köllnische Vorstadt and the Colonie "Grüneaue" / Lusthaus Steinbinde as early as the 1840s , but it has no name. It got its name from the direction seen from Köpenick. In the address books of 1922, when the community of Greater Berlin was established, it is already given by name. It ran between Cöllnischer Platz and the district of Grünau over the Vollkropfgraben with 76 house numbers (assigned in horseshoe shape ). The continuing southern section up to the Teltow Canal, which was completed in 1906, and Köpenicker Strasse (later Regattastrasse) was incorporated into Grünauer Strasse on March 8, 1935. The extension was followed by a renumbering of the parcels with a total of 222 house numbers and a new course.

The proximity to the water played a major role in the economic development of this road, and numerous laundries settled here; In 1922 alone, eleven such companies and another five associated (dyeing and flattening shops) are reported on Grünauer Strasse. Most of the residential buildings on the west side of the street (parcels 2–136) were built in the second half of the 19th century as two- and three-storey plastered buildings in the late classicist style. Until the 1940s, quite a few were owned by laundry owners. In the 1943 address book there are still numerous laundries and dye works listed along the east side of this street (Numbers 3–15: Laundry G. Rannow; Number 22 (first parcel 8): "Köpenicker Dampfwäscherei, Merkur '"; Numbers 57/59: Wylach dye works; number 71/73: Köpenick cooperative laundry (first parcel 64a). There was also a branch of the Berlin Bötzow brewery (parcel 21, until 1935 73a), storage areas for various companies including a “Stätteplatz” as well as boathouses and a boatyard The Teltowkanal-Aktiengesellschaft, Kanalmeisterei Grünau, was located on property 221/222, with an operating area for towing locomotives .

Location and development

Since the beginning of 1936, the house numbers have been set in orientation numbering (also known as the Berlin system) from 1 to 222, the odd ones on the left and the even ones on the right.

From the preserved 19th century buildings along the Grünauerstraße some standing since the 1980s under monument protection , including a foundry. This factory is an unplastered brick building that was given a modern fourth floor in the 1990s. It is behind a brick wall.

East Side

Some boathouses and shipyards are still preserved in the 21st century, such as the Yachthof Grünau or a children's canoe rental. New residential buildings have been added, especially in the northern section of the street. The Grünauer Straße 121–127 block is particularly noticeable due to its individual architectural style: it is graduated between three and five floors and its southern corner is rounded. Also worth mentioning is a historic house (No. 67) from the early 19th century. It was redecorated after 1990 with red plaster elements and a white Art Nouveau ornament above the house entrance.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall , new trade or industry settled on the bank side, including a hotel (No. 1), a mechanical engineering trade, a branch of the Pro Sport Berlin 24 e. V. , a small business park, a concrete plant.

The open-air swimming pool known as the “Miller's Corner” is located on a promontory at the level of parcels 99-101 .

On a site (presumably the plots 199–211, owner of the storage area in 1936 “Schering-Kahlbaum AG” or on parcels that are entered in the address book as “does not exist”, “owner anonymous” and probably with a direct ship connection) was Ordered by Degussa to operate a metal foundry between 1940 and 1945 . The resulting material was called “special metal”, the real name was only known to a few people. It was uranium metal , which is an important raw material for nuclear reactors or atomic bombs . The recipe came from a small research group led by the physicist Nikolaus Riehl , the ores came mostly from the Netherlands . The purest metal blocks that had been made by the end of the war were transported away by the Soviet Army .

West side

On the western side of the road there are two allotment gardens on parts of the reclaimed Vollkropf meadows: “Klondyke” (lots 40–82) and “Grünauer Straße” (lots 148–154). The access roads leading from Grünauer Strasse into these areas are closed to public motor traffic.

The factory dahme Fertigteile GmbH was built on land 210–216, which housed the Grünau concrete works in the GDR era . Five companies have settled on the remaining area of around 300,000 square meters, which temporarily store and process waste, which has now become a nuisance for local residents.

The former administrative and commercial buildings of the Teltowkanal-Aktiengesellschaft are used in the 21st century by the building and housing department of the Treptow-Köpenick district office.

traffic

The entire Grünauer Straße is accessed by tram line 68, which runs between Köpenick and Schmöckwitz. There are five stops along the street. The N62 night bus runs outside of normal operating hours. The district office's catalog of measures in 2010 provided for the establishment of bicycle traffic facilities in some sections due to the cramped situation.
