The Regatta Road is a nearly three-kilometer exclusively in the Berlin district of Berlin-Grunau lying road . The traffic route, running parallel to the bank of the Dahme , consisted of Cöpenicker Straße , Friedrichstraße and part of the street Am Langen See , which had already been laid out in the 19th century. The numerous here about 1,860 incurred club competitions and boathouses of water combine ensured a high level of awareness of this road well over Grunau out. Most of the buildings have been preserved and placed under monument protection, but their condition is in some cases worrying.

Location description

The northern continuation of Regattastrasse from the Grünauer Bridge over the Teltow Canal is Grünauer Strasse in the Berlin-Köpenick district , to the south it continues as a sports promenade behind Krummen Lake . Since the merging of individual street sections, the house numbers follow the Berlin or zigzag counting from north to south and range from 6 to 283; left even, right odd.

History of the northern area: Cöpenicker Straße

The Cöpenicker Strasse, named after its direction from Grünau to Cöpenick , began at the Wilhelmstrasse (since 1938 water sports avenue ) with the number 1 and ran in horseshoe numbering to number 129. It had its turning point at the "district Köpenick", the later bridge the Teltow Canal (number 63/64).

The Grünauer parish hall had the address Cöpenicker Straße 61.

In 1889, the Grünau gasworks of Gasbetreiber-Gesellschaft AG was built on property number 80 to supply the Grünau residents with energy. With the completion of the Teltow Canal in 1906, the Teltow Canal Maintenance Department (number 75/77), which later became the Teltow Canal Corporation, and a locomotive shed came into being (Number 78) for the towing vehicle tractors .

From house number 1 to 27 inclusive there were residential buildings, the opposite side of the street between numbers 91 and 129 also had almost exclusively residential buildings. The Grünau community school (owned by the City of Berlin) was located on the property at Cöpenicker Straße 112/113 (later Regattastraße 82/84 ).

The proximity to water and the cheap transport options on the canal meant that companies and factories, including the Deutsche Reichsbahn (parcel 28th ), moved from the canal to numbers 28 (west side of the street) and 90 (east side of the street) in the 1920s -32) with its sports club and service buildings (Works Office 4), the AG for Mining and Chemical Companies (number 33), the Chemische Fabrik Landshoff & Meyer  AG (number 37-44; number 36 company apartments ), the branch of a bleaching facility (number 45-48). On the east side used theSchering-Kahlbaum AG from 1928 an extensive storage area (number 51–56) for their chemicals . In addition, freight forwarders, a printing company , new storage areas and other companies were added. The industrial expansion progressed steadily in the following years.

From 1931 the street was written with a "K" corresponding to the rewrite of the Berlin district of Köpenick. On March 8, 1935, Köpenicker Strasse merged into Regattastrasse. The entire street now had to be renumbered.

The address books do not reveal when the barracks (current number 12) were erected. The first eight low-rise buildings with gable roofs probably date from the late 1930s, plots 12–16 are listed in the books from 1937 to 1943 as “does not exist”. During the later military use in the GDR era, they were supplemented by several more low-rise buildings and a larger multi-storey building on the corner of Friedrich-Wolf-Straße. At the same time, the Schering chemical factory was not mentioned either, but “does not exist” under the (new) numbers 1–9.

Few of the industrial buildings from the 1920s and 1930s have survived after World War II . The remnants have been and are being gradually removed since 1990. What remained was a large wasteland between the northern Regattastrasse and the Dahmeufer, on which a balloonist had temporarily settled. Opposite Friedrich-Wolf-Straße, on a route that has been a projected road for years, there is still a former gatekeeper's house in the 21st century , which, due to its historical structure, will probably be preserved and will be included in the further redesign of the areas.

Middle and southern area of the street

Today's middle section of the street was Friedrichstrasse , which was laid out towards the end of the 19th century and was named in honor of Friedrich II . It was reserved for local expansion, the residents mainly built larger houses here. In preparation for the rowing and canoeing competitions for the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin , Friedrichstrasse was incorporated into Regattastrasse on March 8, 1935 (the new house number range 125–223). The entire regatta road, including the regatta course that gave it its name, was expanded.

As a continuation of Friedrichstrasse to the south towards Karolinenhof ran the street Am Langen See , the northern area of which was the first to be renamed Regattastrasse on March 23, 1925 (the new house number range 224 to 260). At the same time, the much longer southern area was given the name Sportspromenade ( spelled with Fugen-s until 1931 ). Overall, boat yards , clubhouses of water sports clubs such as the Berliner Rudergesellschaft 'Nibelungen' e. V., the 'Altherren-Verband des ATB zu Berlin', the 'Berliner Regattaverein', the rowing company 'Viktoria' and restaurants the appearance of the street. The latter included the Gesellschaftshaus Grünau (number 167) and the excursion restaurant Riviera (number 161) (see also selected buildings ).

After the end of the Second World War, the property of all the clubs (including the water sports clubs) was transferred to the fiduciary administration of the district offices according to order 124 of the SMAD . As a result, there were no sporting events in Grünau for the time being. The club houses fell into disrepair and did not recover completely even in later times. Some came to larger state- owned companies and served the local company sports communities with the sections rowing, sailing or canoeing. After the reunification , heirs were found from the previous owners and took over what was still there, a sporting revival has not yet been achieved.

The factory premises of the above-mentioned Schering company continued to be used by the successor company VEB Berlin-Chemie from the 1950s onwards . Only after the fall of the wall and the opening of the market was it abandoned, decontaminated and then marketed as building site .

More in the Regattastrasse

According to a plan from 2008, the cleared plot of around 100,000 square meters in Regattastrasse 1-9 was to be developed into a sophisticated residential complex with 400 residential units and an inner green harbor (“Puerto Verde”). The investor, the German-Spanish project development group Meermann -Chamartin, has not become very active since the building permit was granted. One reason is the massive expansion of the waste disposal facility on the north side of the nearby Teltow Canal. In 2012 Chamartin Immobilien AG (CMI AG) had to file for bankruptcy. Thereafter, the Vienna BUWOg was taken over, which continues the Regattastraße project. In 2013, investors learned that after some rescheduling, construction should start now. But in 2015 there was still no sign of construction activity.

Lot number 12 belongs to the Dahme-Spree-Kaserne , which has been used by the Bundeswehr since 1990 . After the army was converted to volunteers, the Bundeswehr Berlin career center and a branch of the Bundeswehr training center are located here .

In 1957 the first youth hostel in East Berlin was opened in Regattastrasse .

Between the plots 174 and 182 there is a park that was laid out at the beginning of the 20th century, which has been preserved and belongs to the area surrounding the Grünau district forester. But it has no name.

The Grünau Water Sports Museum can be visited on Regattastraße 191–223 , which has been set up in the vicinity of the regatta stand since 2000.

In the 1940s, a pump room was specified at Regattastraße 260, although it remains unclear whether it was a pump room used for cures or a sales facility. Because of the proximity to the former sports monument Berlin-Grünau , the sales point is more likely to be considered.

At the very end of the street, where it continues as a sports promenade, the sports monument from 1898, known throughout Germany, stood until 1973. Only an abandoned square with a few boulders can still be seen there today.

traffic

The street is accessible from the suburb of Köpenick to the water sports avenue by the tram line 68 . At the confluence of the Steinbindeweg at the level of the Grünau Water Sports Museum, the route of line 68 joins Regattastraße (from here on as a section of the Schmöckwitz – Grünauer Uferbahn ) and leads over the sports promenade to Berlin-Schmöckwitz .

From the water sports avenue, about 150 meters northeast of the intersection with the Regattastraße, the ferry line F12 connects Grünau with the Wendenschloß location in Köpenick .

Individual evidence

  1. The house numbers mentioned date from 1929, they have always shifted from year to year, probably due to further sales of land and developments.
  2. Probably because of their importance to the war, the camp site of the chemical factory in Schering and the barracks were not allowed to be listed in the address book from 1937 onwards.
