European Physical Society

The European Physical Society ( EPS ) is an association of 42 European physical societies . The scientific society founded in 1968 thus represents over 100,000 physicists in Europe. It is based in Mulhouse , France.

The largest member of the EPS is the German Physical Society with over 62,000 members . Smallest member, the Liechtensteinische with less than 50 members.

The purpose is to organize conferences and promote scientific exchange. It also publishes several scientific journals (e.g. the European Physical Letters and the European Journal of Physics ) and the membership journal Europhysics News (EPN).

It awards various prizes, including the Edison Volta Prize , the CMD Europhysics Prize for solid state physics, the Hannes Alfvén Prize for plasma physics, the Lise Meitner Prize for nuclear physics and the Gribov Medal for theoretical elementary particle physics and quantum field theory.

The EPS Statistical and Nonlinear Physics Prizes has also been awarded since 2017 . The first prize winners were Peter Grassberger and Itamar Procaccia .
