The European DIGITAL SME Alliance is the European association of medium-sized IT companies based in Brussels . The association was founded in 2007 (at that time as Pan European ICT & eBusiness Network for SME) to represent the voice of small and medium-sized IT companies and their interests towards European institutions and other international organizations. The European DIGITAL SME Alliance represents more than 20,000 IT companies from 30 countries in the EU and neighboring countries. The president is Oliver Grün .

History and most important achievements

After a public discussion about the patentability of software , the Pan European ICT & eBusiness Network for SME was founded in 2007. It was founded by UEAPME (European Association of Craftsmen for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises), of which the DIGITAL SME Alliance has been a member since it was founded.

In 2013 the Pan European ICT & eBusiness Network for SME was one of the founding members of SBS (Small Business Standards). Since then, representatives of the DIGITAL SME Alliance have regularly been appointed to the board of SBS and have participated as experts in the technical committees of the European standardization bodies.

In 2016 the Pan European ICT & eBusiness Network for SME changed its name to European DIGITAL SME Alliance. In the same year the association also became a founding member of another organization - the European Cyber ​​Security Organization (ECSO). The European DIGITAL SME Alliance is represented in the management of the ECSO, as President Oliver Grün has also been appointed a member of the ECSO Executive Board and the Partnership Board. Sebastiano Toffaletti, Secretary General of DIGITAL SME, is also chairing WG4 to support SMEs , coordinate with countries (especially the Eastern and Central EU) and regions.

Also in 2016, the European DIGITAL SME Alliance became a member and supporter of the newly created coalition for digital skills and jobs, an initiative launched by the European Commission to close the gap in the area of e-skills in Europe .

DIGITAL SME advocates the creation of an open market for data usage in which both manufacturers and users of machines can use data produced. The recommendations of the DIGITAL SME from 2015 were taken up by the European Commission, which in 2017 set up a European data economy. and announced the related Commission staff working document. Reference was made to the position paper of the DIGITAL SME published in 2016

In May 2017, the European DIGITAL SME Alliance started the # digitalSME4skills campaign, which was launched as part of the Digital Skills and Jobs Coalition. The campaign calls on European SMEs to train skilled workers and help them acquire digital skills through apprenticeship programs. In addition, Oliver Grün has joined the coalition's board of directors.

In July 2017, the European DIGITAL SME Alliance issued its position paper in response to the upcoming review of the European cybersecurity strategy. on cybersecurity, developed in collaboration with ECSO

In 2019, DIGITAL SME published a manifesto with 10 priorities for Europe in the digital age, which is intended to contribute to the development of a strategy for digital policy.

Goals and Activities

The European DIGITAL SME Alliance pursues the following goals:

  • Representation of the interests of all members towards the institutions of the European Union
  • Promotion of the exchange of experience and know-how among the members
  • Implementation of actions at European level, dealing with various topics relevant to small and medium-sized IT companies. Such measures or initiatives could include participating in or organizing training programs, conferences, seminars and research activities
  • Informing members about political issues relevant to small and medium-sized IT companies

The association sees itself as a "mouthpiece" for medium-sized IT companies in Europe. Its main tasks and objectives include:

  • Expand a Europe-wide network of ICT companies
  • Position solutions from European ICT companies more strongly on the European market
  • set uniform standards for European ICT companies
  • Significantly expand the opportunities for small IT companies to participate in European programs
  • Develop ICT support programs for the European Union
  • Promote networking and exchange of experience among member companies
  • Use ICT skills across industries and companies
