European Games

The European Games are sporting competitions between European countries with an Olympic character. The first edition of the European Games took place from June 12 to 28, 2015 in Baku , the second from June 21 to 30, 2019 in Minsk .

The European Olympic Committees (EOK) had long planned to host their own continental games, comparable to the Asian Games or the Pan-American Games . On December 8, 2012, the General Assembly of the EOK decided to host the European Games for the first time in 2015. Baku , the capital of Azerbaijan , applied as the only host . Baku was confirmed as the host with 38 votes to 8. The 2019 European Games were supposed to take place in the Netherlands , but the country withdrew its application because of the costs. After the withdrawal of the Netherlands, Russia was considered the favorite for the event with the joint application of Kazan and Sochi . However, the games were ultimately awarded to the Belarusian capital Minsk .
