Europiella artemisiae is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).
features
The bugs are 2.7 to 3.4 millimeters long. The species of the genus Europiella are small, pale brown-gray colored and pale haired soft bugs. The base of the cuneus of the hemielytras is pale and the spurs of the splints ( tibiae ) arise from black points. They can be distinguished from the similar species of the genus Psallus by their black antennae . The species of Europiella decolor cannot be demarcated with certainty morphologically, but this similar species is usually paler in color than Europiella artemisiae . The basic color of the animals varies from gray-white to almost black.
Occurrence and habitat
The species is distributed almost in the entire Palearctic from Europe to Japan and also in North America. It is widespread and frequent in Germany and Austria and can even be very common in places. Dry to slightly damp, open habitats are colonized.
Way of life
The bugs live on Artemisia species, especially mugwort ( Artemisia vulgaris ), field mugwort ( Artemisia campestris ), wormwood ( Artemisia absinthium ) and beach mugwort ( Artemisia maritima ). They suckle on the immature reproductive organs as well as on the vegetative parts of the plants. There are two generations per year. The adults of the first appear from the beginning of June, those of the second from the end of July to the beginning of August and can be observed until October.
