Eva-Maria Wernicke started working for SC Traktor Oberwiesenthal during her active time . She was considered one of the hopes of the GDR for the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo , but could not qualify for this against Ute Rührold , Margit Schumann and old champion Anna-Maria Müller . But in the same year she won the title at the European Junior Championship. In the following years she was one of the top luge leaders in the GDR and thus in the world. In 1973 she won the bronze medal at the European Championships behind Schumann and Rührold in Königssee , as well as at the World Championships of the Year in Oberhof . In 1975 she only had to admit defeat to Schumann at the European Championships in Olang . In 1976 Wernicke was finally able to qualify for the Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck , but failed there again because of her nerves. In fifth place after the first run, she improved to third place in the second run. Due to driving errors, Elisabeth Demleitner was able to move up to third place in the final third run and Wernicke was able to refer to the ungrateful fourth place.
Nationally, Wernicke won her first bronze medal in 1973, once again behind her permanent rivals Schumann and Rührold. In the following year she also won bronze in the same constellation, in 1975 she was second behind Schumann, and in 1976 she again established the usual Schumann-Rührold-Wernicke sequence. At the 1975 championships in Oberhof , she was clearly in the lead after three out of four races, but missed the win in the last run. In 1976 Wernicke married Ulrich Wehling . After her active career, she studied sport in Leipzig and later moved to Berlin with her husband and had two daughters with him. After the reunification , she accompanied her husband to Switzerland, where he was employed by the World Association of Nordic Skiers . In Switzerland she worked as a company secretary.
