Eva Koff

Eva Koff (born Eva Rõuk , born April 17, 1973 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian writer , children's book author and translator .

Life

Koff graduated from high school in Tallinn in 1991 and then studied Romance languages at the University of Tartu . After graduating in 1996, she mainly worked as a French teacher at various educational institutions. Since 2007 she has been employed in this position at the Tallinn Old Town High School.

Eva Koff is married to the writer and translator Indrek Koff and has been a member of the Estonian Writers' Union since 2014 .

Koff made his debut with a children's book and then switched to writing plays. Her greatest success so far was with the novel The Blue Mountain , which won second prize at the Estonian Novel Competition in 2017. Criticism found that the novel shows “that the essence of man and his striving are independent of time. Society can change, and it does (...), but the human soul always remains the same ”. The novel is set alternately at the beginning and the end of the 20th century and illustrates Estonian history to the readership using the fates of three women. Some critics even drew the comparison to Thomas Mann's Zauberberg , others saw parallels with Vahur Afanasjev , Rein Raud or Urmas Vadi .

As a translator from French, u. a. she translated books by Amélie Nothomb and Anne de Rancourt .
