history

In the first half of the 16th century, Luther's teaching of the freedom of the gospel quickly found supporters in Radkersburg and the surrounding area. In 1541 the Protestants appeared in public for the first time in Radkersburg. In 1528 a commission was visited on behalf of the Bishop of Laibach to exhort the clergy and the citizens of the city to the Roman Catholic faith. The visitation had little effect. The number of Protestants continued to rise, and the Catholic priests were so-called shepherds without flocks . In 1582, Carl Freiherr von und zu Herbersdorff (1547-1606) donated a Protestant church with a school and a messner's house on the Prentlhof in front of the city wall in the west of the city. In 1599 170 episcopal subjects with 150 good German musketeers occupied the city. With the support of a 400-strong Slavon militia, the city's privileges and jurisdiction were withdrawn. Former council members were fined and a new city council was installed. Citizens were forced to give up their misconceptions . The Protestants' books were confiscated, inspected by the Catholic priest and then burned. The foundation church including the Herberstorff estate was blown up in 1600. Some followers were expelled from the city and possession of Luther's writings was forbidden. 1500 riflemen of the garrison remained in the city until 1607.

In the 19th century there was a reawakening of Protestantism in Radkersburg. The new parish has existed since 1906. Before moving into their own church, a prayer room in Gornja Radgona was used. The construction of the church building was also supported by believers from Prekmurje . The simple, barrel-vaulted hall church with west tower was built from 1930 to 1931 according to plans by the Viennese architect Clemens Maximilian Kattner .
