The Protestant church is a listed church building in Altenstädt , a district of Naumburg in the Kassel district ( Hesse ).

History and architecture

Altenstädt has had its own priest since 1272. The community became Protestant in 1523. Until 1644 it was under the patronage of the Merxhausen Monastery . Altenstädt belonged to the parish of Elben until 1656; the pastor lived in Elben and held services in Altenstädt.

From the medieval previous church, the Gothic defense tower with four guard houses on the helmet attachment is still preserved. Since the church records were destroyed in the Thirty Years' War, there are no more records of the construction. The architecture of the tower suggests that it was built in the 14th or 15th century. The tower is 22 m high; In 1753/54 a baroque portal framed by pilasters was built into the west side of the tower.

The original nave was built in half-timbering and had become completely dilapidated; it was completely demolished in 1753. The current nave was from 1753 to 1754 by Giovanni Ghezzy as a church hall with three-sided externally and internally round circuit built. The sandstone altar table from 1763 is a donation from a benefactor as a thank you for surviving the Seven Years' War . The historic organ from 1843 had 14 registers, it was broken off in 1956 due to severe woodworm infestation and replaced by a used instrument from Hüddingen . This was followed by extensive renovations. The west gallery was widened, the east gallery was demolished. The organ was placed from the choir gallery on the rear side of the church to the tower wall.

Since the church was built on a former cemetery, cracks in the walls were created when the foundation wall was removed. This required extensive renovations in 1977 and 1978. New altar windows were installed in 2009. Chemical pollution of the room air by wood preservatives was determined in 2011. For this reason, all the benches and the wooden floor were removed. The floor was covered with sandstone slabs. The floor of the church was raised to a level with the choir to ensure accessibility. A newly built round bench in the choir room guarantees flexible seating for events and church services.
