Evangelical Church in Gundelsheim

The Protestant church in Gundelsheim in the district of Heilbronn in northern Baden-Württemberg was built in 1895/96.

history

Gundelsheim, which was once part of the Teutonic Order, was practically purely Catholic until the order was secularized and the place transitioned to Württemberg . In the 19th century, a large number of Protestants came to the place for the first time. In 1871 there were 102 Protestants (compared to 1,042 Catholics and 6 Jews). By 1924 their number had tripled.

Until 1851 the Protestants in Gundelsheim attended the service in Jagstfeld . In 1851 Gundelsheim became a branch of the newly established Protestant parish administration in Neckarsulm . The Protestant pharmacist Sandel, the owner of Horneck Castle at the time , made the old castle chapel available as a church service room, which was re-inaugurated on October 5, 1851. From then on there was a weekly church service in Gundelsheim, which was held by pastors from the surrounding towns. The old tower bell of the castle, which was allowed to ring for 10 minutes, served as the church bell. In 1891, a new chapel was set up at Horneck Castle under the castle owner Friedrich Trump.

The Protestant community in Gundelsheim had a Protestant school since 1889, which was set up in the house of the sawmill owner Klink. When Klink gave up the classrooms in 1894, the community decided to build its own school. The future of the castle chapel was also no longer certain, as a change of ownership was expected at the castle, so the construction of a prayer room as an alternative accommodation was considered. Initially, it was planned to set up the prayer room on the first floor of the school building, then at the urging of the consistory and the Gustav Adolf Association , it was decided to build separate buildings for the school and church. The community then acquired the property on Panoramastraße, where the schoolhouse was consecrated on August 30, 1895 and the church on August 24, 1896.

In the First and Second World Wars , bells were delivered to be melted down . In 1952, the ringing was extended again with a loaned bell from Pomerania, which, however, did not match the sound of the still existing bell. In 1955, three new bells were cast at the Bachert bell foundry . These bells were now too large, so that the belfry had to be rebuilt. The borrowed bell was then returned to the Oberkirchenrat, the old bell came to Oedheim .

In 1967, the Protestant community of Gundelsheim, which now has around 1000 members, was elevated to a parish .

In 1956 and 1982 extensive interior renovations took place in the church. The neighboring school building was demolished in 1995 and a new community center was inaugurated in its place on May 5, 1996.

description
