Evaristo Carazo Aranda

Evaristo Carazo Aranda (* 1822 in Cartago , Costa Rica , † August 1, 1889 in Managua , Nicaragua ) was a Nicaraguan politician of the Conservative Party and from 1887 to 1889 president of the country.

Life

There are alternative information about both his date of birth and his place of birth. The Ministry of Education of Nicaragua mentions Rivas as a possible place of birth.

Carazo took part in the defense of Rivas against William Walker . During his reign he promoted the country's public school system in continuation of the work of his predecessor Adán Cárdenas. His support for the University of León also belongs in this context.

In the economic field he promoted coffee growing and cattle breeding . He had the river port of El Rama docked. Carazo founded the Banco de Nicaragua and the Banco Mercantil de León in 1888 .

Carazo died on August 1, 1889 in the exercise of his office. His official duties were taken over by Nicolás Osorno on an interim basis . The National Assembly then appointed Senator Roberto Sacasa as his successor, who first ended Carazo's term of office and was then re-elected President.

The Carazo department bears his name.
